Asking someone out can be a nerve-racking experience, but the real challenge is figuring out what to do after they say yes. Going on a date is exciting and can be a great way to get to know someone better, but it can also get expensive quickly. If you’re like most teenagers, you might be worried about the cost of dating. Fortunately, with a little creativity, there are lots of ways to have fun together without overspending.
Here are some of the top inexpensive date ideas for teens:
Cheer on
If you or your date is a sports fan, think about heading to your school’s game to cheer on your team. As a student, you most likely won’t have to pay to watch the game and can spend time with your date united in school spirit. Check out your school’s sports schedule and pick out a game that the two of you can enjoy together.
Head to the zoo
If there’s a zoo or animal sanctuary where you live, consider heading there to look at the animals with your date for an afternoon. The zoo is an excellent place to see exotic species and spend some quality time with another person. Some cities offer their zoos for free to residents. If there is a cost, you might be able to save money with your student ID. Once you’re at the zoo, spend time taking in the scene and photographing the animals.
Picnic
A picnic can be enjoyed by people of all ages and is also a great idea for an inexpensive meal with a date. If there’s a nice park close to home or school, pack a lunch and head over on a nice day. You can bring inexpensive sandwiches, snacks, fruit and drinks to enjoy together. Don’t forget to bring a blanket or sheet to sit on and think about bringing along other activities to do. Throwing a Frisbee back and forth is a fun (and free!) way to pass the time with another person.
Campfire
If you’ve got the outdoor space and the weather permits it, build a small campfire to enjoy some food or s’mores around. Use the fire to cook hotdogs or roast marshmallows. Sitting around a fire and telling stories is also a good way to get to know another person without spending much.
Craft
Another easy option for a date is to create something together. Whether or not you are artistically inclined, painting or doing some art projects can be a fun way to get to know each other. You might even discover some unknown talents.
Service
Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community and help out those in need. Additionally, it can be a charitable way to have a date. Ask your date if they would like to join you in gardening, building homes or handing out food at the local pantry. Whatever kind of work you enjoy doing, getting your hands dirty or working toward a goal can bring you closer together.
